SportBefore revolution the main sport centers in Ukraine were Kyiv, Odessa and Kharkov. It is not surprising since information about different sports, their rules and statistics was flowing from abroad to large and developed cities in the first place. Here sport enthusiasts formed clubs and social organizations and in such a way cultivated a sporting culture in society.

With Soviet accession to power situation changed. The USSR aspired to be the number one country in the world. It concerned not only armament, science and economy but also sport. Healthy and active way of life was promoted among the population. New sport sections, schools and clubs both for children and for adults were created everywhere. Sports competitions and tournaments were conducted on a regional, oblast and republic level.

After Ukraine became an independent state a condition of Ukrainian sport has largely deteriorated. The main problem is a lack of budget. State, surely, allocates money into sport but it is scanty and is distributed mainly between oblast centers. So on a regional level this money is not usually seen.

Research show a number of Ukrainians who practice any kind of sport is several times inferior to this measure in developed countries. According to state statistics data 13% of our citizens practice any kind of sport. Only one Ukrainian citizen in 50 takes part in sport competitions. Hypodynamia is characteristics of the majority of able-bodied and elderly people (92-94 % and 96-97% respectively). Only one child in 10 aged 6-18 practice sport in a system of sport establishments for children and youth.

Yet, despite all difficulties, Ukrainian land has proven its ability to bring up outstanding sportsmen. Brothers Klitschko, Andrey Shevchenko, Yana Klochkova, Sergey Bubka, Oleg Blokhin, Vasiliy Virastyuk are known all around the world.
