Diaspora

Ukraine »
Diaspora Ukrainian diaspora is a quite large group. More than 7 million of Ukrainians live in the former republics of USSR and up to 5 million — in far abroad countries.

Its formation started only in the times of Stalinist deportations. The second stage began after the World War II when a part of Ukrainian land was taken by neighboring countries (Poland — 300 000, Romania — 100 000, Slovakia — 40 000 people of Ukrainian origin).
Diaspora is conditionally divided into eastern (Russia — 4.3 million, Kazakhstan — 900 000, Moldova — 600 000, Byelorussia — 300 000, Uzbekistan — 150 000, Kyrgyzstan — 100 000 inhabitants of Ukrainian origin) and western (USA — 2 million, Canada — 800 000, Brazil and Argentina — 400 000 in each, Australia, France and Portugal — 40 000 in each, United Kingdom — 30 000, Germany — 25 000).

Ukrainian diaspora maintains its links with its historical motherland with the help of a civil and cultural organization “Ukraine”. An important role in strengthening of these lings is played by a magazine “Ukrainian Diaspora” which is published by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
